First Visit Experience
What To Expect
In your first counselling session, you can expect a welcoming and non-judgmental environment where we can begin to explore your thoughts and feelings. Below is a general outline of what the session might include:
- Introduction and Rapport Building: The session will start with introductions, giving you a chance to get to know me and for me to learn more about you. This is a time to discuss what brings you to counselling and to begin establishing trust.
- Discussion of Concerns: You’ll be encouraged to share the issues or concerns that led you to seek counselling. This might include specific challenges you’re facing, emotions you’re experiencing, or goals you want to achieve.
- Understanding Your Background: The counsellor may ask about your personal history, including your family, relationships, work, and past experiences with mental health. This helps the counsellor gain a fuller picture of your life and the context of your concerns.
- Setting Goals: Together, you and the counsellor will start to identify your goals for therapy. These could be broad, like improving your overall well-being, or specific, like managing anxiety or enhancing relationships.
- Explaining the Counseling Process: The counsellor will explain how the counselling process works, including confidentiality, the expected frequency of sessions, and the methods or approaches they may use. This is also the time to ask any questions about the process.
- Next Steps: Toward the end of the session, the counsellor may outline what you can expect in future sessions, and you’ll discuss the next steps. This might include setting up regular appointments and exploring strategies for addressing your concerns.
The first session is primarily about building a foundation for a strong therapeutic relationship, so you should leave feeling heard, understood, and hopeful about the process ahead.
