What Is a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC)?
A Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) is a professional who typically holds a master’s degree in counselling psychology, clinical psychology, or a related field. They are certified by the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC).
Furthermore, these essential elements form the foundation of an effective therapeutic relationship, which is central to the practice of clinical counselling. RCCs are required to:
- Prioritize the client’s well-being in all aspects of the therapeutic relationship.
- Collaborate with the client(s) to gather relevant information that supports the overall goals and outcomes of clinical counselling.
- Engage in ongoing evaluation of the client’s experience and the therapeutic course of care.
- Practice safe and effective use of self throughout the clinical counselling process.
- Adhere to BCACC’s Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics.
A copy of the Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics is available upon request.
How Do I Choose the Right Counsellor?
When selecting a counsellor, consider the following factors:
- Education and Training: Look at the counsellor’s level of education and training.
- Ethical Practice: Ensure they practice under a code of ethics that you can review.
- Experience: Find out how long they have been in practice.
- Availability: Check their availability to see if it matches your schedule.
- Recommendations: Seek recommendations from friends or colleagues.
- Support Between Sessions: Determine if they offer phone support or crisis intervention between sessions.
- Fees: Consider their hourly fee and whether it fits your budget.
- Health Plan Coverage: Verify if the RCC designation is covered under your extended health plan.
- Complaints Process: Ensure there is a complaints process through their professional association.
- Intuition: Trust your intuition and first impressions during the initial interview.
Choosing the right counsellor is a personal decision, and considering these factors can help you find a good match.
What Are My Rights as a Client When Seeing a Registered Clinical Counsellor?
As a client, you have the right to:
- Choice: Select the counsellor and treatment that best suits your needs.
- Informed Consent: Consent to therapy with a full understanding of your rights and the risks involved.
- Respect and Dignity: Be treated with respect and dignity.
- Individualized Treatment: Receive treatment tailored to your unique needs.
- Questions: Ask questions at any time about the counsellor’s training, credentials, the approach being taken, or any other concern.
- Refusal and Termination: Refuse suggestions made by the counsellor, end treatment at any time, or request a referral to another counsellor.
- Complaints: Take any unresolved complaints to the B.C. Association of Clinical Counsellors at www.bc-counsellors.org.
Understanding and exercising these rights can help ensure a positive and effective counselling experience.
What Are My Rights to Privacy and Confidentiality?
Your privacy and confidentiality are paramount. I will inform you before and during counselling about any limitations to privacy and confidentiality.
- Confidentiality: All information you share with me is confidential and will not be released to any third party without your explicit written consent. However, there are specific exceptions:
- Risk of Harm: If there is a clear risk of substantial harm to yourself, me, or others, I am ethically bound to take steps to prevent harm, including disclosing information to the appropriate authorities.
- Child Protection: If there is reason to believe a child needs protection (e.g., being harmed, abused, or exploited), I am legally obligated to report this to the authorities.
- Insurance: If an insurance company requires a report, I will discuss and review it with you before submission.
- Legal Requirements: If the law requires the release of confidential information (e.g., court subpoenas), I will ask you to sign a waiver of responsibility for such releases.
- Confidentiality Clarifications: If there are issues regarding confidentiality (e.g., group sessions or third-party payments), I will clarify them before providing services.
- Couples and Family Therapy: In couples and family therapy, confidentiality is partially waived because secrecy can disrupt the therapy’s effectiveness. Open communication is essential for resolving issues. While not all information will be automatically shared, you will voluntarily waive your right to confidentiality with other family members participating in the sessions.
Understanding these rights and limitations helps ensure a transparent and effective counselling process.
